Dalgona Matcha Latte
We are all obsessed with the Dalgona coffee trend but we wanted to create something different with a matcha twist!
Matcha is a powdered tea made from young green tea leaves. It’s popularly used in desserts and beverages. We will be using matcha powder instead of the traditional instant coffee in this recipe to create the perfect matcha whip.
What is Dalgona Coffee, anyway?
Dalgona coffee originated in Korea. The word Dalgona means honeycomb candy. It’s a simple drink made from creating a whipped cream out of instant coffee and sugar. You fill your glass with ice and milk then add the whipped cream on top. Mix well and voila!
So, now that you’re in the loop, let’s prepare the matcha version! It’s prepared the same way but we will be using different ingredients. You create the matcha whip by combining pasteurized egg whites, sugar (we used a sugar substitute), and matcha powder.
This drink is totally customizable! Instead of using whole milk, we used coconut almond milk. We also topped the matcha whip with coconut flakes! You can top off your drink using chocolate shavings, sliced almonds, or fruit! You can also add essential oils such as lavender or rose!
What can you use as an egg white substitute?
Vegans typically use a very popular egg white alternative called Aquafaba. It’s the liquid you see when you open a can of chickpeas. The combination of starches and proteins creates an egg-white consistency making it useful to emulsify, bind, and froth!
How to make a Dalgona Matcha Latte
Recipe Ingredients for Creating the Matcha Whip
1. 2 tsp Matcha powder
2. 1 egg white or ¼ cup of aquafaba
3. Granulated sugar (We used Swerve Sugar as a healthier alternative)
Step 1: Add egg white or Aquafaba to the bowl and use a whisk or handheld mixer to whip the egg white until it becomes white, frothy, and thick. If you are doing this by hand, be patient! It will take a good 8-10 minutes for the egg white to thicken. Your wrist and forearm will get a good work out!
Step 2: Add sugar into the bowl and continue to whip until you create stiff peaks. You can tell you have stiff peaks by lifting your whisk to see a white peak at the end of the whisk form! We used Swerve Granulated sugar as a healthier sugar replacement because it has 0 calories and is low in carbs. It’s made from the natural sugars of starches and the consistency and measurement are the same as regular granulated sugar!
Step 3: Add matcha powder into the bowl and mix thoroughly until you get a nice green color
Step 4: Add ice and pour milk to glass but leave about an inch or so for the whipped matcha.
Step 5: Scoop the whipped matcha on top of the milk
Step 6: Add your toppings or leave it naked! Mix the whip and the milk together and enjoy!
